Synopsis: Instructional Design Models

Instructional design models were first published in the late 1960’s to early 1970’s (Reiser & Dempsey).  Since the 1960’s, there have been many developments in instructional designs transferring into workplace performance and human performance technologies.  Reiser and Dempsey (2007) explained the impact instructional designs have made in the fields of cognitive psychology, instructional and performance technology, and constructivist practices.  The increasing rate of technological advances, especially with Web 2.0, have expanded the role of educators, which in turn has broadened the role of instructional designers to improve learning/ training.  With all of the developments in mind, this team reviewed four instructional models focusing in the areas of motivation, parts to whole task analysis, learning styles, and incorporating instructional technology.
