ASSURE Model

Heinich, Molenda, Russell, and Smaldino based their instructional design model on classroom practices that integrate technology and media in teaching, and as such presented the ASSURE model (Gustafson & Branch, 2002).  The ASSURE  model stands for analyze the learners, state the objectives, select the appropriate media and resources, utilize media and resources, require learner participation, and evaluate and revise (Gustafson & Branch, 2002, p. 23).  The first step in analyzing the learners is a recognition and an understanding of the learners’ needs and different learning styles.  Culatta (2013) stated that instructional design is not effective if it does not begin with an attempt to understand the learner in full details to be able to construct a differentiated learning environment.  The second step is built on stating the objectives.  The instructional designer is concerned with being clear on the learning outcomes and evaluative process.  Objectives should be linked to how technology will achieve those outcomes. When planning the learning objectives, Othman, Pislaru, and Impes (2014) emphasized these objectives use technology as a tool and not as a stated objective by itself.  This is an important emphasis because technology integration is not a goal by itself in this model but rather a means to improving learning.
